Just a few miles from Shipwrecks Beach is Makauwahi Cave, Hawai'i's largest limestone cave and one of the richest fossil sites in the islands. Geologists believe that the cave began its formation up to 400,000 years ago as a sand dune. Take a hike down into the cave and explore this living musuem. Volunteers offer free guided tours. Donations are welcome. When you finish at the cave, check out the nearby tortoise sanctuary.
